PITTSBURGH – Gatesman, one of the fastest-growing, privately owned marketing communications agencies in the U.S., was awarded the Silver Davey Award from the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts (AIVA) for its editorial design work for client Senator John Heinz History Center.

This year, among over 3,000 entries, Heinz History Center was awarded a Silver Davey in the Editorial Magazine Cover category for its Summer 2017 cover, designed by senior art director Bryan Vorp.

“This type of work demands thoughtfulness and a keen eye for detail,” said Julie Allard, EVP, Executive Creative Director. “The beauty of this design is that it goes beyond capturing attention; it holds it. I am so happy to see the amazing work of our creative team get the recognition it deserves.”

AIVA, an organization dedicated to evaluating creative media and its impact, recognizes the finest creative work from small shops, firms and companies worldwide with its annual Davey Awards.

The award-winning Western Pennsylvania History Summer 2017 cover serves as a captivating preview to ‘Locating Luna,’ an article within the magazine that describes the history of Pittsburgh’s once popular Luna Park. The amusement park, which opened in 1905 when Pittsburgh was spelled without an ‘h,’ was designed by local inventor and ride builder Frederick Ingersoll. The park was home to world class attractions in Pittsburgh’s Oakland community.

“The idea behind the cover was to bring to life the glowing light that Luna Park would have exhibited back during its heyday,” said Vorp. “We’re talking about a park that had 62,000 light bulbs in an era when most homes were still lit by oil lamps. It would have been a spectacle back then, and we captured that by enhancing the lightbulbs which outlined Luna Park’s entrance.”

In addition to the Silver Davey in the category of Editorial Magazine Cover, Heinz History Center also earned a Silver Davey for Copywriting.

Vorp has been working with Heinz History Center for the past seven years, and is also an integral member of the teams working with clients Northwell Health, Pace Bus, UPMC, and Del Monte.
