PITTSBURGH – NOVEMBER 20, 2023 – Gatesman is thrilled to announce that it has been named social agency of record for the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, the premier global research pioneer founded by Two-Time Academy Award-Winning Actor Geena Davis. The Geena Davis Institute has a nearly 20-year history of mitigating unconscious bias and driving inclusion in media and entertainment. Gatesman has been tapped to drive social media content strategy, content creation, community management and ideation against the Institute’s upcoming 20th Anniversary milestone, which will be celebrated in 2024.

“The Institute is a global force like no other with unique research-based expertise and deep connections within the media and entertainment industry which have the power to reinvent, transform and inspire how content creators and the media industry tell stories,” said Beth Thompson, VP, Director of Public Relations and Social Media. “We are so honored to be a part of a team of pioneers that is determined to change the world and make a life-changing impact in media and entertainment by fighting for authentic portrayals of the world we live in.”

For nearly 20 years, the Geena Davis Institute has championed equitable representation of onscreen entertainment and media. With a commitment to cultivating content that accurately reflects the world’s population, the Geena Davis Institute also increasingly advocates for increased representation of marginalized groups within six identities: gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQIA+, disability, age and body type.

“We are partnering with Gatesman at a critical inflection point as we celebrate a significant milestone – our 20th anniversary in 2024,” said Madeline Di Nonno, President and CEO of the Geena Davis Institute. “The female led team is a great partner because of their innovation and creativity and because they ardently believe in our mission.”

The Institute’s longtime success is driven by data and insights to influence and diversify the authentic representation in media and entertainment. This year to-date, the Institute has partnered with key stakeholders across the industry to release three groundbreaking research reports, including the Reflecting India: An Intersectional and Longitudinal Analysis of Popular Scripted Television from 2018 to 2022, Changing the Narrative: Why Representation in Video Games Matters and From Real to Reel: Representation and Inclusion in Film and Television Produced in British Columbia reports. To further showcase the team’s impact and notoriety in the media and entertainment world, the Geena Davis Institute received the prestigious Governors Award at the 2022 Emmys award show.

Gatesman too has been focused on elevating inclusivity and representation, inside its four walls and through client initiatives. In 2016, the agency established its DEI caucus, a forum dedicated to listening, learning and taking action. With the support of executive leadership, the Caucus enforces anti-racism practices and works directly with the team to maintain an equitable and inclusive environment where diversity is accepted, appreciated and welcomed. In addition, the team is proud to have 70% female representation in its c-suite, in which many of the executives joined forces in the spring of 2023 to host an inaugural #internationalwomensday panel to lean into key issues faced by working women. Most recently, Gatesman completed a comprehensive qualitative and quantitative study of Gen Z to encourage even more inclusivity of this important generation across media and communications.
